The seasonal holidays are only days away, and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is prepared for the burst of increased travel activity that accompanies this cheerful time of year.

Passenger traffic is expected to be heaviest at MSP in the days just after Dec. 25, including the 26th and 27th.

MSP continues to advise passengers to arrive two hours ahead of domestic flights, and three hours ahead for international travel. Stay in touch with your airline and check for any changes to your flight before coming to the airport.

Some new offerings for passengers at both MSP terminals in recent months can help you on your way. MSP Reserve allows you to make a reservation for a security line time slot. There’s no charge.

If you’re a driver dropping off passengers at Terminal 2, consider using the Express Lane that opened recently, providing additional roadway capacity. If you’re parking at MSP, don’t forget that you can reserve a parking spot ahead of your arrival.

For those picking up passengers, remember to use either roadway level in front of Terminal 1 for drop-offs or pick-ups. If one roadway level is congested, use the other level and coordinate the new location with your passenger by cell phone. Another convenience: the cell phone waiting lot can be used when picking up at either terminal.

Once inside either of MSP’s terminals for a departure, look for kiosks operated by your airline to print out bag tags for checked bags. Airline staff can help direct you.

As you move toward the security checkpoint lines, the TSA has some tips for families traveling with children.

Once you're inside security, your schedule may allow you to bump into some surprise and delight activities, and a chance to visit with Santa. Look for all the fun on the mall at Terminal 1, near the tree.

  • December 19 | 8 – 10 a.m. | Santa and his elves, with a balloon artist and face painter
  • December 20 | Noon – 2 p.m. | Santa
  • December 23 | 9 – 11 a.m. | Santa

There are also delicious choices for whatever type of meal or snack you have in mind, and plenty of shopping options. Visit our Eat, Shop, Relax page for tools to find all your favorites, or explore some new ones.

Also make sure to watch for “Sounds of the Season” musical and dance performances in both terminals.

MSP wishes you the happiest of holidays and a bright and successful New Year!
