Delta Air Lines to offer automated bag check at MSP

Jun 15, 2017

Four self-service bag drops will open near Delta Air Lines’ ticketing counter at MSP’s Terminal 1-Lindbergh later this summer.

The airline’s $600,000 investment will allow Delta passengers to securely and quickly check their own bags.

The airline will collect customer feedback during the trial of the automated bag check process and use it to improve the experience. The trial period at MSP will help the airline assess whether to deploy the equipment more broadly across the U.S.

One of the machines will be equipped with facial recognition technology to match customers with their passport photos, which is a first for U.S. air carriers. Delta employees will also be on hand to assist travelers with the new equipment.

The self-service devices will generate a tag for each bag that's checked.

Delta says studies have shown that the self-service bag drops could potentially service twice as many customers per hour.
